Your Library Needs You - Help Protect Federal Funding

Libraries change lives. Every day, Chattahoochee Valley Libraries provide more than books—we offer opportunity, connection, and hope. But now, our essential services are at risk.

A recent executive order proposes eliminating the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS), a critical source of federal funding for public libraries. Without this support, we could lose:

  • Reliable internet access for thousands—leaving us with a $100,000+ budget shortfall we cannot absorb.
  • Summer Reading program support, which prevents learning loss and keeps children engaged.
  • Services for the blind and print disabled, ensuring access for all.
  • The statewide courier system, which delivers books and enables interlibrary loans.

As a vital public service, we are already facing rising costs locally—including a recent $481,000 increase in employee health benefits. Without IMLS funding, we will be forced to make difficult cuts that could limit access to the very resources our community depends on; especially connectivity.

We need your voice. Contact your state and federal officials today and tell them:

Sample Letter:

I am writing to express my support for federal library funding and to stand against the Executive Order cutting funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

This order would have disastrous effects for communities nationwide, including across Georgia, where libraries are strong partners in everything the state does, from strengthening early literacy to building a strong economy.

Funding from IMLS enables Georgia Public Library Service, as the state library administrative agency, to provide services to all Georgia public libraries. Leveraging federal dollars on a statewide scale ensures all Georgians have access to the same high-quality library programming and services, no matter where they live. IMLS dollars also fund the Georgia Library for the Blind and Print Disabled, so that all can read, as well as PINES, the statewide lending network, and the Summer Reading Program.

In FY2024, Georgia expended $5,167,570 in federal funding to expand learning resources, increase access to information, and provide lendable technology for individuals of all ages.

I urge you to please support funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services to ensure these programs can continue to benefit communities across the country.
