Join GPB at the Columbus Public Library On Wednesday, August 9th for a free screening of Monument: The Untold Story of Stone Mountain, a new documentary film from the Atlanta History Center.
Stone Mountain is home to the largest Confederate Monument in the world. It features carvings of three prominent leaders of the Confederacy. To some, it’s a monument to Southern heritage, but to others, it’s a painful reminder of the South’s effort to hold onto slavery and the oppression of Black Americans. Watch as Atlanta History Center explores the history of the Stone Mountain carving including the origin of the carving and the complicated relationship between historical events and key players who establish it. The documentary is designed to inspire deeper learning and conversation about history that we as a state, and a country, share. Atlanta History Center President & CEO Sheffield Hale and VP of Digital Storytelling Kristian Weatherspoon will participate in a panel discussion following the film.
The program is free, but registration is required.
