A Reese's Book Club selection for September 2023, Simon’s dazzling debut novel is an exploration of family dynamics across generations that addresses issues of land conservation, racism, and what it means to be a strong woman at any age. Simon expertly weaves these elements together, creating a mystery that is smart, twisty, empowering, and ultimately, feel-good.

A big-hearted mystery, MOTHER-DAUGHTER MURDER NIGHT is a tender family drama about a trio of amateur detectives—a grandmother, single mom, and teenage girl—who come together to solve a murder in their coastal California town.

“Simon’s dazzling debut delivers everything a mystery fan could crave, including a realistically nuanced cast of characters, a vividly evoked coastal California setting, writing imbued with a deliciously desiccated sense of wit, and a perfectly plotted murder with enough red herrings deftly dropped in to confound the most experienced mystery reader. Insightful and frequently funny analysis of family dynamics wrapped up in a cleverly crafted cozy crime novel.”—Library Journal

Nina Simon has worn many hats: NASA engineer, slam poet, museum director, global nonprofit founder, and more, but mystery writer was never in her plans. That all changed when her hard-driving businesswoman mom got hit by a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Nina quit her CEO job to care for her. While she was glad to be there for her, it was a stressful and dark time. They needed something to talk about that wasn’t cancer. So, they turned to a lifelong shared love: murder mysteries. And so, MOTHER-DAUGHTER MURDER NIGHT was born. Simon originally set out to write this story for just one person: her mother, but as Lana, Beth and Jack came to life, Nina and her mother couldn't help but want to share their story with the other mystery-loving readers.
