The Genealogy and Local History Department serves as the Chattahoochee Valley area's primary repository for genealogical and historical research materials. Genealogy and local history reference services and materials are located on the second floor of the Columbus Public Library. Visitors searching their ancestry in Georgia or one of the states of the American Southeast will find the Library's Genealogy Department to be of valuable assistance.

The Department offers users 8 microfilm reader/printer/scanners, 6 computer workstations, 2 photocopiers, a Minolta PS 7000 book scanner, wireless access to the Internet, and the expertise of our staff.

Genealogy Classes

The Genealogy staff currently offer the following classes each month.  Please contact them at 706-243-2681 to reserve your space.

Genealogy Basics: This class will cover the basics of how to begin your research, what resources are available and what basic forms and programs you will use in your family history project.  In addition, the class will take a look at other resources needed to complete your family history.  Some of the areas covered will be the census, soundex, regional resources, military records, and other resources that will aid in the organization of your research.

Ancestry.com Library Edition: This in-depth class will demonstrate how to successfully navigate the online database Ancestry.com Library Edition.  Patrons will learn the key factors in formulating search strategies.

NEW! Genealogy on the Internet: This class will take a look at a few key Internet sites and demonstrate how the Internet can be used as a tool in your family history search.

Heritagequest.com: This in-depth class will demonstrate how to successfully incorporate the online database Heritagequest.com into your family history research.  Heritagequest.com offers remote access, an intuitive interface, fast downloads, and crisp images.

Genealogy reference service is available in person, email or by mail. Mail requests should include the type of record desired, the full name of the ancestor, applicable dates and city/county of record. Obituary requests should include the deceased's full name and month, day and year of death. Please include your full name, mailing address (city, state, zip code), and e-mail address on all correspondence.
